The contact for the snatch should be in the hip crease for most athletes. The vast majority of athletes we work with understand this concept but often times for cleans athletes either consciously or unconsciously do not understand the correct contact point.
The most common error we come across is athletes thinking a clean should be contacted in the hip crease like a snatch this leads to excessive arm bend and other mechanical issues.
The clean contact point should be somewhere on the upper thigh area. This will allow for the most efficient clean pull. This is an issue of understanding that I come across frequently when teaching the lifts and can be easily fixed!
